Chief of Lebanese General Security : Syria has No connection to the arrest of al-Mawlawi

BEIRUT– Chief of General Security in Lebanon, Brigadier General Abbas Ibrahim, stressed that Syria has no connection to the arrest of Shadi al-Mawlawi on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization.

Speaking to the journalists on Tuesday, Ibrahim said that what has been said about orders from Syria or Hizbullah is totally untrue, confirming media reports on coordination with an embassy or a western security agency to arrest al-Mawlawi as true.

Ibrahim said that members from al-Qaeda are in Lebanon and al-Mawlawi is a part of a terrorist network, adding that "we know that there are members from the Syrian opposition in Lebanon and I dare anyone to say that the General security has assaulted them.

He said that he visited Syria and met some officials there, indicating that he is coordinating with Syria and the Lebanese laws are clear in this regard since there are agreements between the two sides.

He stressed the importance of coordination with Syria to preserve security in the two countries.
